New Girl, FOXâs quirky primetime comedy debuted in the fall of 2011 to raved reviews. This intriguing comedy attracted more than 10 million viewers when its pilot debuted on September 20, 2011. Â Since then it has maintained a loyal following due to its well-written script, talented actors and refreshing humor. Itâs been nominated for several awardsâsome of which it won. The awards which it has garnered include the Criticsâ Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series and Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
The Story of New Girl
The showâs main star is Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel), an eccentric teacher from Portland, Oregon. After she discovers that her boyfriend is cheating on her, she decides to seek a new apartment. Her discovery that the apartment of interest houses three male roommates doesnât deter her from maintaining an interest in the loft. After all, she highlights that the apartment is close to her work. The three roommates Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Coach (Damon Wayans , Jr.) allow her to move in mainly due to Schmidtâs interest in her model friends.
What ensues is an awkward yet hilarious illustration of how the ânew girlâ is unable to fit in an otherwise established order. Jess is the odd ball who admittedly is depressed due to her recent breakup. She cries almost uncontrollably and watches hours of âDirty Dancingâ, wrecking the otherwise ânormalâ environment. The guys, unable to function with her hopeless moping decide to cheer her up and help her to overcome heartache. Jess and the guys begin a new found friendship and romance develops between Jess another roommate, Nick.
The romantic turn of events ultimately changes the direction of New Girl. However, this development in the story is praised by critics who believe that it adds depth to the show. As one critic highlights âtogether [Nick and Jess] are fully functional [making] each other humanâ.
An original cast member of the show, Damon Wayans Jr. had to leave to be in another sitcom. Now, he’s back.
Coach Returns in Season 3
Those whoâve been watching New Girl will remember Coach from the pilot, the fitness trainer roommate who had serious problems communicating with ladies. By the second episode Coach was nowhere to be found. A new guy, Winston (Lamorne Morris), became one of the showâs regulars instead.
Well, Coach returns in season 3 for six episodes which might leave you wondering why he left in the first place. Hereâs the history:
Damon Wayans Jr. who paid Coach, was written out of the show due to the fact that he was contractual bound to Happy Endings, a sitcom on ABC. As a Time Magazine article highlights, when he was originally cast as one of the roommates, New Girl creators as well as Wayans Jr. expected that Happy Endings would be cancelled. However, when the show was not cancelled, he had no choice but to leave New Girl.
The decision of the showâs creators to allow Lamorne Morris to play Winston on the show rather than âCoachâ was a wise choice. Â It provided room for him to return when his contract with the ABC sitcom ended.
But what exactly will he bring to the table? Firstly, his sense of humor is surely a good addition to the quirky comedy. His stint on the third season of New Girl will also offer us a deeper glimpse into his characterâa character who really should have been one of the central highlights of the show but due to circumstances remained an embryo.
Another benefit of his return relates to its effect on the other characters. According to the showâs executive producer Bret Baer, the return allows Nick and Schmidt to âstep back in timeâ as they recall how life was before the addition of Jess as a roommate. However, this ultimately results in ramifications, especially for Nick and Jessâ relationship.
Prince to guest star on New Girl
Damon Wayans, Jr. isnât the only guest star to appear on the 3rd season of New Girl. According to a Time Magazine report Prince, the musician of epic proportions, will be guest staring as himself on the TV showâs post super bowl episode. Â
Though little has been revealed about his appearance on the show, sources suggest heâll cause conflict in Nick and Jessâ relationship. Though Prince is known for his peculiar taste and illusive flair, he was actually the one who approached producers with the idea to appear on the show. Not surprisingly, producers couldnât resist affirming his request.
Fans should expect a sizzling performance from Prince who is arguably the biggest guest star on the show since its inception.
Season 3 of New Girl continued with quirkiness and sometimes bizarre humor as it focuses on the relationship of Jess and Nick. The guest appearance of Damon Wayans Jr. and music icon, Prince, are some highlights of season 3. Stay tuned to FOX to get the latest on this comedic gem.
