5 Dazzling Features of Android Lollipop 5.0

In September of this year Google released the latest version of its Android mobile operating system dubbed Android Lollipop 5.0. This new version of the OS provides sharp aesthetics that makes it stand out from rival offerings such as Apple’s iOS 8. This modern OS also boasts unique features that result in an obvious improvement to previous versions of Android.

New Design

Lollipop stands out from other versions of Android due to its fluid user interface (UI) dubbed Material. This new aesthetics enables users to enjoy a bolder and more intuitive experience. For instance, Lollipop offers a different app drawer and setup menu as well as animations, icons and apps buttons that enhance the interactive nature of the experience.

Another significant aspect of Material is its vivid colors which represents a bold step in terms of aesthetics. The bright colors associated with this new UI provide a light yet modern look for Android.

Improved Security

In terms of security, Lollipop provides a convenient option that protects Android smartphones by enabling users to pair their phone with Bluetooth or NFC devices that they own. Once the smartphone is paired with these trusted devices, the smart lock no longer appears on the screen. Thus users won’t need to worry about unlocking their phones when trusted devices are in range. To pair your phone to a trusted device, visit Settings > Security > Smart Lock > Trusted Devices.

Lollipop makes security more convenient by featuring a new Android Smart Lock which enables users to view notifications on the lock screen. In addition, the latest Android devices come equipped with encryption features which turn on automatically to protect valuable data. Thus, users whose devices run Android Lollipop 5.0 will have no need to manually implement encryption in order to secure data stored on their devices.

This feature follows decisions made by Apple to encrypt devices by default — decisions which have been criticized by government agencies like the FBI since improved encryption makes it more difficult for them to monitor the behavior of mobile users.

More Control over Notifications

In Lollipop, users get more control over their notifications since they can limit interruptions in a few simple ways. For instance, users can now view and respond to notifications from their lock screen without needing to unlock their device.

Lollipop also prioritizes notifications by ranking them based on the sender and subject or nature of the communication. This enables users to focus on what matters most without needing to be distracted by incoming notifications. In addition, users can control notifications sent from particular apps, thus limiting the amount of messages they receive on a daily basis.

Improved Battery Life

Most smartphone users whether in the past or present have experienced the frustrations associated with a depleted battery. When a phone goes dead unexpectedly and charging is not possible, many hours of productivity, connectivity and entertainment can be lost. Thankfully, Google’s latest Android OS comes equipped with several improvements in terms of battery life. Lollipop enables users to more easily conserve energy and predict how much time it takes to charge their device. This results in better usage patterns and increased productivity for the average Android user. Android 5.0 Lollipop achieves these results in the following ways:

  • Lollipop introduces a battery saving mode which provides an additional 90 minutes of battery life when activated. In order to extend battery life, Lollipop deactivates background data, and reduces lighting and other key features which usually affect battery life.

  • Android 5.0 features a new Android RunTime (ART). This optimizes performance and conserves battery life by reducing the amount of CPU cycles required during the interpretation of code.

  • Users can also access more information regarding battery life by simply checking Settings. Once users select Battery, they’ll be able to determine how long their battery will last. During charge, they’ll also be able to visit Settings to determine the time required for their phone to fully charge.

More Access to Ok, Google

Ok, Google is undoubtedly one of the most iconic features that the latest Android OS has to offer. Lollipop provides an improved OK, Google experience by enabling access while running most apps. Once Android 5.0 Lollipop is installed on your device, select Settings > Language & Input > Voice Input > Gear > “Ok, Google” Detection > Enable Google.

Once you activate this feature by saying “Ok, Google” three times, you’ll be able to voice commands to this personal assistant while using different apps on your device. This makes the Android experience much more fluid since users will not need to close screens or apps in order to access Ok, Google.

With Android Lillipop 5.0, Google implements a bolder design while improving key features related to security, notifications and ‘Ok, Google’. Thus, Lollipop provides a more fluid experience with the latest version of its popular mobile operating system.
