The LG G3 Kicks its Competitors to the Curb

When’s the last time you saw a smartphone that captivated your eyes, heart and mind? In 2014, several of the most anticipated phones hovered in the imaginations of gadget enthusiasts, promising to offer features and an overall experience that would kick the competition to the curb. My most recent discovery of the high-end, super-spec LG G3 was one of delight, especially due to the phone’s crisp design and powerhouse features. This smartphone may just cement LG within the hollowed category of high-end smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung.

Design

Hold your breath and take a closer look. Here’s a phone that highlights the possibilities in smartphone design. The LG G3 flagship device boasts a stunning 5.5-inch display and thin bezels that wrap around its edges, resulting in a compact look for the premium device. The G3 retains the rear power and volume buttons found on its predecessor but the buttons are upgraded, resulting in a more responsive and comfortable experience in your hands. The phone’s curved back also results in a more comfortable fit even though the phone with its 5.5-inch screen is relatively big when compared to other handsets.

Though the G3 is made of plastic, it features a metallic finish which results in a premium appearance resembling that of smartphones with metal designs. It also comes in several colors including “metallic black”, “shine gold”, “silk white”, “moon violet” and “burgundy red”.

Display

When it comes to displays, few are as eye-popping as that of the G3 smartphone. The handset boasts a 5.5-inch Quad HD display with 2,560×1,440 resolution to capture stunning images. This ultra-sharp display knocked the competition clear off the curb, especially since it supports 538 pixel per inch (ppi). Such a pixel density enables the display of vibrant colors and detailed images on your screen. To put this in perspective, Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S5 offers 431ppi and a 1,920×1,080 resolution. That’s more than 100ppi less than G3’s ultra-dynamic screen. Another contender, the HTC One M8 also offers a less impressive screen with a 441 ppi.

Clearly, the creators of the G3 wanted to offer a handset that would stand out from among the crowd and attract customers who are seeking the next big thing within the mobile industry.

Performance and Battery

Those who recall the G2 will remember a smartphone that was snappy – a phone which would perform multiple tasks at breakneck speed without any indication of lagging. The G3 which features a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor is just as good if not better. The device is no slouch, responding immediately to taps whether you’re opening a new app or multitasking.

As with the design, LG manufacturers were intent on improving the battery and overall performance of the G3. The phone features a removable battery, a new addition that many smartphone lovers will love since they’ll be able to easily replace it if it gets damaged or worn out. Though the phone is 8.9mm thin, it houses a powerful 3,000mAh battery that also offers improved battery life when compared to its predecessor. This is due to the fact that LG replaced the battery’s metal cathode interior with granite.

This type of battery seems to rank in line with competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S5 which features a 2,800mAh battery. The higher resolution of the G3’S screen however drains more juice so the battery’s power may be somewhat undermined if the granite interior is unable to significantly expand and sustain power.

Camera

lg g3In terms of the camera, LG was determined to bring as many dynamic features as possible while ensuring that quality stood at the forefront of its efforts. The G3 features a 13-megapixel rear camera that can capture 4K HD videos. The front-facing camera on the other hand offers 2.1-megapixel capacities in addition to 1080p HD video recording. Though the front-facing camera offers lower resolution when compared to selfie cameras found on the HTC One M8 or Sony Xperia Z2, it offers a high-end experience with numerous features that camera lovers will enjoy.

One of the most striking features of the G3’s camera is its laser technology. The Laser Autofocus feature measures the distance between the smartphone and the subject of the photo. This is especially useful in low-light situations since it enables the camera to focus at a quicker pace and thus takes less time to snap stunning photos.

There’s also the gesture control feature found on the front-facing camera, ideal for selfie lovers. This feature will enable users to activate a countdown timer with the clench of their fists, offering more control to those seeking the perfect selfie.

The Verdict

Though the LG G3 handset has its limitations, it’s clearly one of the most impressive phones thus far in 2014 and will soon become available via carriers like AT&T. This device kicks its competition to the curb thanks to its sleek brushed metal design, 5.5 QHD display and laser-powered camera.
