Earlier this year, HTC launched the M8, a premium handset that wowed tech enthusiasts due to its sleek all-metal design and powerful features. But not every customer would be able to afford its premium price tag, with or without contract. Not surprising, Taiwanese creators of the M8 launched the HTC Desire 610? But does this device have what it takes to be desired above other mid-range contenders?

 

HTC attempts to offer the perfect mid-range smartphone left much to be desired. Though the device is budget-friendly and offers interesting features, its substandard display and plastic design results in a device that looks and feels inferior when compared to other mid-range phones. However, it may be your best alternative to the HTC One M8 if you are looking for a cheaper version of the device.

 

 

The Design and Display

 

The device comes mainly in dark navy-blue plastic and features thick black bezels. This gives the 143.5g smartphone a cheap appearance. Thankfully the device is not as bulky as the thick bezels would lead you to think. At 9.6mm, it’s only a few millimeters thicker than the M8’s 9.35mm build.

 

Now here’s where I found the device to be most disappointing. Desire 610’s 4.7-inch screen offers sub-250 pixels per inch. Such a screen in no way competes with HD screens offered by LG G3 which boastS ppi 538 or even budget-friendly devices like the 4G version of the Motorola Moto G with its 326ppi.

 

 

Since the HTC Desire 610 is a mid-range smartphone, its low resolution screen isn’t necessarily a deal breaker. However, in 2014 such a screen definitely feels like a throwback.

 

 

Performance and Battery Life

 

The phone’s processor is one of the most noteworthy aspects of the device since it offers enough power to guarantee almost 100% glitch-free performance. Desire 610 boasts a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor that’s adequate for most tasks, whether you’re running power-hungry games like Riptide or multitasking with various apps. The device provides a smooth performance while you navigate apps and perform tasks such as gaming, browsing the net, or social media.

The 4G LTE smartphone runs on Android 4.4.2 and boasts HTC’s Sense 6 interface found on the One M8.
