Earlier this year, HTC launched the M8, a premium handset that wowed tech enthusiasts due to its sleek all-metal design and powerful features. But not every customer would be able to afford its premium price tag, with or without contract. Not surprising, Taiwanese creators of the M8 launched the HTC Desire 610? But does this device have what it takes to be desired above other mid-range contenders?
HTC attempts to offer the perfect mid-range smartphone left much to be desired. Though the device is budget-friendly and offers interesting features, its substandard display and plastic design results in a device that looks and feels inferior when compared to other mid-range phones. However, it may be your best alternative to the HTC One M8 if you are looking for a cheaper version of the device.
The Design and Display
The device comes mainly in dark navy-blue plastic and features thick black bezels. This gives the 143.5g smartphone a cheap appearance. Thankfully the device is not as bulky as the thick bezels would lead you to think. At 9.6mm, it’s only a few millimeters thicker than the M8’s 9.35mm build.
Now here’s where I found the device to be most disappointing. Desire 610’s 4.7-inch screen offers sub-250 pixels per inch. Such a screen in no way competes with HD screens offered by LG G3 which boastS ppi 538 or even budget-friendly devices like the 4G version of the Motorola Moto G with its 326ppi.
Since the HTC Desire 610 is a mid-range smartphone, its low resolution screen isn’t necessarily a deal breaker. However, in 2014 such a screen definitely feels like a throwback.
Performance and Battery Life
The phone’s processor is one of the most noteworthy aspects of the device since it offers enough power to guarantee almost 100% glitch-free performance. Desire 610 boasts a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor that’s adequate for most tasks, whether you’re running power-hungry games like Riptide or multitasking with various apps. The device provides a smooth performance while you navigate apps and perform tasks such as gaming, browsing the net, or social media.
Embedded under its hood is a 2,040mAh battery which gives the device enough juice to lasts for several hours while you watch HD videos or access the Internet. HTC states that the device’s battery lasts as long as 15.8 hours during talk time though this may vary among users.
Camera
The HTC Desire 610 features two cameras: an 8-megapixel rear-facing main camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter. The main shooter takes quality photos though it does not feature the UltraPixels found in the M8’s camera. Users can easily experiment with the 8-MP camera due to its simple interface which offers several modes including HDR.
When it comes to sharing your favourite moments via photos and videos, the phone also offers an easy solution through Zoe. This feature enables users to transform photos and videos into mini-movies. Users through Zoe can simply choose their favourite photos/ video clips, choose a theme and soundtrack, then share on platforms such as Facebook.
Software and Storage
The 4G LTE smartphone runs on Android 4.4.2 and boasts HTC’s Sense 6 interface found on the One M8. This offers a mobile experience that’s very different from those being offered by non-HTC Android devices. But it’s an experience that most users will enjoy due to Sense 6’s charming minimalistic design.
One of the highlights of the unique HTC’s unique interface is BlinkFeed. Like Flipboard, it streams new articles, social media and trending topics from the net. This is a great aggregator for those who want to keep abreast of news and social media updates. It’s also very accessible since it sits on your home screen but users who may not be interested in this feature can easily remove it.
The phone comes equipped with 8GB of onboard storage and offers expandable memory up to 64GB via a microSD card slot. Phones with expandable memory compatible offer an advantage since users will be able to determine how much memory they need and adjust the device’s standard memory accordingly. Most who purchase this device will soon need to increase the memory since 8GB gets used up quickly as you download games, music, apps and photos.
HTC Desire 610 is definitely not one of the most impressive devices in terms of specs. If you are looking for a mid-range handset that offers the most value for money, consider the Moto G (4G). If on the other hand, you’re hungry for the HTC experience but desire a cheaper version of the HTC One (M8), Desire 610 may be your best bet. The phone comes equipped with a powerful processor, decent cameras and expandable storage.
