Microsoft Surface Hub Promises to Transform the Workplace

Microsoft, in addressing the collaborative needs of today’s workplace, announced a new device called the Surface Hub. This device literally looks like a flat-screen but offers advanced features which include multi-touch and multi-pen. It also comes equipped with cameras, sensors, NFC, Bluetooth and a host of apps which highlight Microsoft’s commitment to building dynamic hardware in an increasingly competitive technological market.

What is Microsoft Surface Hub?

There are two versions of Microsoft’s Surface Hub: one with an 84-inch 4K display, and a 55-inch 1080p model. These versions of the device which can be mounted on the wall of an office, or any convenient location for that matter, represent the future of the workplace. The Hub is much more than a tool for displaying content. Instead it uses a customized version of Windows 10 to provide advanced features for its users.

For instance, the Surface Hub is built for multi-touch and can recognize up to 100 different touch points at the same time. What this means is that several individuals could touch the screen simultaneously, resulting in convenient collaborative opportunities within the workplace.

The hybrid computer also is multi-pen capable, enabling the use of up to three pens simultaneously. Since the device also features a 120Hz refresh rate, the Microsoft Surface Hub offers a smooth collaborative experience as multiple users tap or “ink” the screen.

Apps, Apps and More Apps

What makes the Microsoft Surface Hub revolutionary as well is its utilization of the large screen to maximize access to productivity apps. The flat screen hybrid computer comes equipped with OneNote, Skype for Business, plus Microsoft Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

One major app that Microsoft execs used to demonstrate the multifaceted functions of the Hub during the Windows 10 event back in January is the OneNote.  This app provides users access to improved productivity since it enables them to write notes on the Hub screen, manipulate 3-D models, clip content and much more.

When users write notes or make changes to documents via touch or pen, changes are automatically made to the documents on the user’s compatible devices. This means users will be able to connect multiple devices to the Hub (via Bluetooth or NFC) and experience a dynamic connection that results in more fluid collaboration and creativity. With automatic updates to content across multiple devices, users can do much more in less time. But that’s not all. Apps like Skype for Business offer further enhancements to the collaboration process.

The integration of this application in the Surface Hub experience makes it easy for users to connect and share content with others. With the touch of one button, users can start a Skype meeting and share content displayed on the Hub’s large 4K or 1080p screen. When the meeting concludes, the content can easily be saved and sent to those who participated in the meeting. The Hub user simply taps on the screen to save and send content to participants for later use.

The built-in speakers, microphones, cameras and sensors also result in enhanced productivity since those who participate in the Skype call will be able to experience crisp video and audio.

When Will the Microsoft Surface Hub be Available?

The Surface Hub is expected to hit the market later this year. Though a specific date is yet to be announced, consumers can stay tuned for updates in upcoming months.

Microsoft’s Surface Hub represents a new step towards the future of workplace computing. The device offers opportunities for advanced collaboration due to its multi-touch, multi-pen, NFC and Bluetooth features. It also comes equipped with built-in apps such as Office, OneNote and Skype for Business.
